A national championship rematch on Tuesday night between North Carolina (6-1, 2-4 ATS) and Michigan State (5-1, 2-3 ATS) highlights this year's ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Actually, the Heels and Spartans met twice last year, with UNC winning both in blowouts. But it's State that has the edge in returning experience in 2009 -- yet it is still a solid underdog on Bodog's college basketball odds.
The Spartans lost their first game of the season last week to Florida -- despite winning nearly every key statistic -- but then bounced back to crush UMass 106-68, shooting 58.6 percent from the field and 63.6 percent from the 3-point arc. MSU's is connecting on 55.6 percent of its shots over the last three games, including 46.9 percent from 3-point range. Sparty is still an iffy free throw shooting team.
UNC, which on Nov. 20 lost to Syracuse for its lone setback, was 2-0 last week but was tested by Nevada in an 80-73 win. The Heels have been unable to string together back-to-back impressive efforts so far this season. Sophomore Larry Drew II has been inconsistent at point guard, but he was very good against Nevada. He will be at a major mismatch with MSU's Kalin Lucas, however.
Spartans coach Tom Izzo has said used the words "revenge game" as motivation for his players in this one despite the many new Heels in big roles. Izzo said his team was "embarrassed" by UNC last year. When deciding your college basketball bet here, know that this is State’s first true road game of the season, but it was 9-1 in on its opponents' home courts last year.
The ACC has won the Challenge with the Big Ten for 10 years in a row and holds a 42-20 lead in the past six years. North Carolina has beaten Michigan State four times in a row overall.
