Not often does an unbeaten team ranked at the top of the polls need to send a message. That's the case, though, for Pete Carroll's squad, which was knocked off the No. 1 ranking in college football despite winning. Voters penalized the USC Trojans because they had difficulty last week while LSU breezed to another win. The Tigers took over the top spot while the Trojans were dropped to No. 2 in the nation.
On Saturday, USC figures to be on top of its game as it hosts northern neighbor Stanford. The Cardinal got awful news this week as quarterback T.C. Ostrander suffered a seizure on Sunday. He will be out for the USC game. Sophomore Tavita Pritchard will make his first start for 1-3 Stanford.
Meanwhile, John David Booty has looked sharp while the Trojans' defense has been astounding in the early part of the season. The Cardinal aren't an imposing threat, which is evidenced by the point spread. USC is favored by 23.5.
