College Football Offensive Tackles: Midseason Report Card

Last year’s run on offensive tackles at the NFL draft proves how important this position is now viewed by college football cognoscenti. It’s a more subjective call given the lack of statistical evidence, but we’re giving Ole Miss OT Michael Oher the game ball and an A+ for his continued excellence protecting Jevan Snead’s blind side. He’s been sacked just eight times in eight games.

The Biggest Man on Campus is Oklahoma tackle Phil Loadholt at 6-foot-8 and 350 pounds. He’s mauling undersized linemen, but he’s still ungainly enough to let some of the speediest defenders get past. Loadholt gets an A for his run blocking and his improved pass protection.

Things haven’t gone as smoothly for Ohio State’s Alex Boone. He was unable to help Todd Boeckman against USC, and he suffered a hip injury against Purdue. Boone gets a C-; his focus is in question these days.
