On Saturday, March 15 in Japan, the main event of Heiwa Dream 1 Lightweight Grand Prix 2008 1st Round turned out to be a nightmare.
Facing off in a much-anticipated lightweight match, American Top Team Fighter Gesias "JZ" Calvancanti (14-1-1) seemed to be beating Japanese fighter Shinya Aoki (14-2-0).
However, three minutes into the first round, as Aoki shot in for a takedown, "JZ" landed a series of illegal strikes, spiking the point of his elbow into Aoki's back and neck. The fight was declared a "no contest" as Aoki was not able to continue. Now, event matchmakers are left with the question of which fighter, if either, will advance to the second round.
While the main event ended in controversy, former Bodog Fight champion Eddie Alvarez (13-1-0) thrilled the audience with a TKO win over Brazilian fighter Andre Amade (6-3-1). Amade rocked Alvarez with hard punches early in the fight, but the Philadelphia fighter took his opponent down and pounded out a win at 6:47 in the opening round.
Former UFC fighter Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic (23-6-2) also won by TKO, beating opponent Tatsuya Mizuno (3-3-0) senseless with punches and kicks, dropping him to the mat just 56 seconds into their fight.
