Drum Tower Tragedy Tarnishes Beijing Debut

The first day of Olympic competition was marred by tragedy on Friday as the father-in-law of American volleyball coach Hugh McCutcheon was stabbed and killed while touring an ancient landmark.

Todd Bachman, of Lakeville, Minnesota, was visiting the 13th century Drum Tower when the assailant struck. Also seriously injured in the attack were Bachman's wife Barbara Bachman and their tour guide.

The man suspected of the attack then threw himself off the 130-foot-high balcony of the Tower to his death below.

The tragic news comes on the heels of an opening ceremony that was regarded by many as extremely successful.
