Ben Hartman's 34-yard field goal as time expired lifted East Carolina to a 41-38 victory over 24th-ranked Boise State in the first-ever meeting between the schools at the Hawaii Bowl from Aloha Stadium.
The kick capped the wild final minutes of the game where Boise State got a prime chance to tie with minutes to play, but East Carolina recovered a fumble at their own 25.
Then, in a stunning turn of events, Chris Johnson fumbled on a 2nd-and-5 from the Pirates' 45 with 1:25 on the clock, and Boise State's Marty Tadman scooped up the ball and ran 48 yards for the score.
Kyle Brotzman hit the extra point to tie the game at 38 before Hartman’s game winning kick.
Pinkney went 13-of-22 for 154 yards and one touchdown and Johnson added 223 yards rushing and a score on 28 carries for the Pirates, who finished the year with four wins in their last five games.
Jamar Bryant had six catches for 78 yards, while Johnson also caught three balls for 32 yards and another TD.
Tharp passed for 270 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions on 30-of-44 passing for the Broncos, who ended the season with two straight losses.
