One day after Rich Rodriguez’s next team upset the defending national champions, his last squad stunned the third-ranked team in the country.

Led by interim coach Bill Stewart, the 11th-ranked Mountaineers blew out Oklahoma 48-28 in the Fiesta Bowl on Wednesday night in Glendale, Ariz. The point spread favored the Sooners by nine and the betting total went way over 62.

Rodriguez left two weeks ago to take over the program at Michigan, which beat the Florida Gators in the Capital One Bowl in Lloyd Carr’s last game as Wolverines coach.

Stewart grabbed the reins in West Virginia and demonstrated enough that he may warrant the job full-time. He called the Mountaineers a group with “the greatest chemistry and best character”. They displayed both qualities against Oklahoma, as well as a lot of talent.

Quarterback Pat White threw for two touchdowns and rushed for 150 yards in an MVP performance. He was 10-for-19 passing for 176 yards.

The Mountaineers’ defense dominated the first half, limiting the Sooners to just two field goals. West Virginia took a 20-6 lead into the intermission and had four sacks and one interception for the game.
