Four seeded women went home on Thursday, though none higher than No. 13 Marion Bartoli.

Those moving into the third round included both Williams sisters—Venus needed three sets, Serena two—No. 5 Jelena Jankovic, No. 7 Svetlana Kuznetsova and No. 4 Elena Dementieva, who advanced when Jelena Dokic stopped playing because of a bad back while leading 6-2, 3-4.

Dokic turned for a backhand during the fifth game of the second set, grimaced in pain and called time. She then reached toward the lower part of her back and gingerly walked toward her chair to call for a trainer.

Today Ana Ivanovic will be in action against Iveta Benesova. Ivanovic is listed as a -800 favorite in the match.

Maria Sharapova (-275) also continues her comeback against Yaroslava Shvedova (+200).
