Frank Shamrock on Cung Le, Ken Shamrock and Josh Thomson
Frank Shamrock plans to knock out Strikeforce fan favorite Cung Le and his own brother, mixed martial arts legend Ken Shamrock.
Strikeforce champion Frank Shamrock (22-8-1) does not shy away from making controversial remarks.
Case in point: While doing play by play at "Strikeforce at the Playboy Mansion," mixed martial arts fans were shocked when, seemingly out of nowhere, he said that fighter Josh Thomson (14-2-0) was homosexual.
We caught up with Shamrock cage-side at "Strikeforce: Four Men Enter, One Man Survives" to get some answers.
Q: You said some pretty crazy stuff about Josh Thomson at the last Strikeforce event.
A: I just told the truth. He’s been wearing all these shirts around which have been promoting himself as a dominant gay figure, and I thought he was gay. So if that was my fault, I apologize to Mr. Thompson, but word on the street was that he was an openly homosexual man, and I wanted to be supportive of that.
Q: Right. I heard somewhere that you might fight your brother Ken Shamrock.
A: That's true. Ken and I became brothers through fighting. We came to love each other through fighting, and we really feel like the best thing in the world we can do is to fight each other because that’s the biggest honor we could do for each other to celebrate what we do.
Q: So is there any animosity between you and Ken?
A: Oh, of course! Big brother, little brother. Someone’s gotta win and it ain’t going to be me losing, I’ll tell you that right now.
Q: Who do you want to fight next?
A: Renzo Gracie. In our last fight he quit on the fans, he quit on me and that’s not cool. I want that back. I want to give it back to the fans.
Q: I hear Cung Le wants to fight you too.
A: I want to give Cung some more experience, and then I’m going to knock him out for our good in front of fans here in San Jose.
Q: What about the winner of the four-man tournament?
A: The reason why we had a tournament is we need stars to present themselves in the sport. If we get a star out of this tournament, I’m going to walk in there and kick the crap out of them.
Q: And what about Chael Sonnen? He's issued you a public challenge
A: Never heard of him. He’s probably a nice guy though. I wish him the best of luck in that endeavour.
Q: Wow.
A: I’m going to knock Cung Le out. Then I’m going to knock Ken out. Then I’m going to have a few more kids and we’ll see if we get some stars out of this organization, or any other organization, or the sport in general, and then I’ll knock them out.
Q: You've got quite a plan there
A: I’ll be doing this ‘til I’m 45, and I’m 35 right now. I've spent 13 and a half years as a professional. No amateur career whatsoever. I turned pro in eight months, and I’m going to do 25 years of professional fighting before I retire.
