In the first game of the 2008 European Football Championship, co-host country Switzerland was dealt a disappointing defeat at the feet of the older, more experience Czech Republic.
Though not for a lack of opportunities, the Swiss club simply could not finish on a number of opportunities throughout the game, including a free-kick in the final minutes.
At the 70 minute mark it was reserve Vaclav Sverkos who netted the first and only goal of the game, after being inserted into the line up in place of Jan Koller.
If losing at home wasn't enough to ruin this Swiss team's day, just before halftime, skipper Alexander Frei went down with a knee injury.
Following the first matchup of the day was a tilt between Turkey and Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugese club.
Second half goals from Pepe and Raul Meireles gave Portugal an advantage they would not surrender and an early lead on Group A after one day's worth of games. Get your Euro 2008 soccer betting in the Bodog Sportsbook today.
