It has been quite a past few weeks for Tiger Woods as he tries to regain his status as the best and most popular golfer in the world – sorry, Tiger, but Phil Mickelson is that guy right now. Woods of course missed the cut two weeks ago at Quail Hollow with one of the worst rounds of his career, then he had to withdraw last week from the Players Championship last week with a neck injury, marking the first time ever that Tiger didn’t finish consecutive tournaments.
Well, Woods’ world just got a little more disrupted with the news that his swing coach since 2004, Hank Haney, is stepping down.
“I have informed Tiger Woods this evening that I will no longer be his coach," Haney wrote on his website. "I would like to make it clear that this was my decision. Tiger Woods and I will always be friends, but I believe that there is a time and place for everything and I feel at this time and at this place in my life I want to move forward in other areas.”
Haney said he wished his former pupil well in golf and "in finding peace and happiness in all aspects of his life." There had been some rumors that Tiger was going to leave Haney, who has come under some criticism. For example, Tiger’s former coach Butch Harmon said that Woods' "game is in disarray." NBC commentator Johnny Miller said last week that Woods "should forget the Hank Haney stuff. It's not working."
Tiger won 31 PGA Tour titles and six major championships under his Haney, but Tiger’s swing is clearly a mess right now -- might caddie Steve Williams be the next to go? And we still don’t know the serious of his neck injury and if that will keep him from competition for a while – get your PGA Tour odds at Bodog. Woods said the neck injury arose two weeks before the Masters and has been getting worse the more he played. He insisted it had nothing to do with the infamous crash that turned his personal life into tabloid fodder.
TMZ.com reported Monday the Tiger has hired high-profile divorce attorney Thomas Sasser, "an expert in enforcing international child custody agreements." RadarOnline.com is reporting both Woods and his wife will share custody of their children in a divorce, but that Elin wants to bring the children to Sweden.
