Hockey Accident Video - Richard Zednik Reminds Us of Clint Malarchuk

Sunday's scary incident involving Richard Zednik of the Florida Panthers has many in the hockey world thinking back on another near-catastrophic moment in the game's history.

Zednik's right carotid artery was severed by a skate blade yesterday in Buffalo causing blood to spill out onto the ice at HSBC Arena. Fortunately, Zednik is in stable condition in hospital, but it could have been worse if not for doctors.

"That injury certainly could be fatal, but I wouldn't say that he was close to death," Sabres team physician Leslie Bisson said at a televised news conference today. "If you can stop that bleeding from continuing, then you have some time."

On March 22, 1989, Buffalo goalie Clint Malarchuk needed 300 stitches and nearly died when his jugular vein was cut by a skate blade. Here's the video of that incident, one of the most infamous in NHL history.
