After four full rounds of golf it took a two-hole sudden death playoff to declare Justin Leonard the winner at the Stanford St. Jude Championship Sunday afternoon.
Tied at four under heading into the playoff, Leonard, Trevor Immelman and Robert Allenby all looked to poised to contend for the Memphis victory.
Though Allenby's 3-0 record in PGA playoffs heading into Sunday was the most impressive of the three (Leonard 1-4, Immelman 0-1), it was Immelman who carried the most momentum having birdied the last three holes of regulation.
With the stage set for both Immelman, this year's Masters champion, and Allenby, the 35-year-old Leonard knocked down a birdie put in the second hole of the playoff giving him the win just one week before his birthday.
Yesterday's leader Tim Clark crashed and burned after fighting for pole position in pursuit of his first PGA championship. Clark shot six over on the day and dropped from first to 18th.
The best performance of the day belongs to American Tom Pernice Jr. who shot seven under.
