Justin Timberlake to Host ESPYs; Watchability Further Plummets

For the uninitiated, the ESPYs are an Oscar-like awards show hosted by the World Wide Leader in an effort to celebrate the best of the sporting world. It often features a series of weird categories and a mailed-in sports skit from Will Ferrell (this was before he turned them into movies like Semi-Pro).

Anyways, this year, the ESPYs have decided to go a new route by asking Justin Timberlake to host the show. He'll join the likes of LeBron James, Matthew Perry, Lance Armstrong, Jimmy Kimmel, Jamie Foxx and Samuel L. Jackson as some of the more famous hosts in the ESPYs 15-year history. This'll be the first time a musician (yeah, I know he was in Alpha Dog, but I'm not ready to call him an actor) has taken the stage for hosting duties - it could be scary.

And for fun, here are some of the less famous ESPY hosts from years past:

  • 1996 host Tony Danza
  • 1997 host Jeff Foxworthy
  • 1998 host Norm McDonald

If anything, getting Timberlake to host is a big notice to the award show community that the ESPY hosting duties aren't just for guys with several failed sitcoms on their resumes. Take than, People's Choice awards.

All the ESPY wackiness will go down at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on July 20. It will be televised live on ESPN, so we're sure hilarity will ensue.
