March Madness by the Numbers

Here’s a breakdown of March Madness by the numbers:

Just nine teams have won the NCAA Tournament after entering the event ranked No. 1 in the country. Kansas is hoping to repeat North Carolina doing just that last year.

Technically, there has never been a Final Four featuring all four No. 1 seeds. It actually happened once in 2008—Kansas, UNC, UCLA and Memphis made it—but the Tigers had their season wiped out because of an ineligible player.

A 16-seed has never toppled a 1-seed in the history of the Tournament.

Seeds 1-4 have a very high success rate in the first round. The 1-seeds win 100 percent of the time; the 2-seeds 96 percent; the 3-seeds 85 percent; and the 4-seeds at 79 percent. After that, there’s a considerable drop off and we begin to see upsets. The 5-seeds, for example, beat their first-round opponents only 66 percent of the time.
