Mariners Give Mike Hargrove Going-Away Gift with 2-1 Win Over Blue Jays

Their manager may have quit but the Seattle Mariners sure haven't.

Jose Guillen homered to the tie the game in the eighth then singled in Adrian Beltre with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, sending Seattle over Toronto, 2-1, at Safeco Field on Sunday. The win was the Mariners' eighth in a row and came just hours after Mike Hargrove said he was retiring because "his passion has begun to fade".

Hargrove was in the dugout for the Mariners, who were -104 favorites on the moneyline (meaning a winning wager of $104 would net a $100 profit).

John McLaren takes over the team starting Monday in Kansas City.

The Blue Jays, playing before a large contingent of fans who had made the trek to Seattle on Canada Day, had taken a 1-0 lead on Frank Thomas' career homer No. 501 leading off the top of the seventh. It looked like the Jays would be able to avert being swept, but Guillen tied it with a solo shot of his own then won it after Beltre and Raul Ibanez got aboard in the ninth off Jeremy Accardo.
