New York Yankee outfielder Hideki Matsui secretly tied the knot with a 25-year-old woman in New York yesterday, winning a bet with teammate Derek Jeter in the process.
During the press conference Matsui said very little about his bride and showed only a crude sketch of her face. He also revealed that Jeter, Bobby Abreu and himself had a bet on who would get married first.
"We've got a bet going," Matsui said. "If (Jeter) doesn't get married within a year, I win the bet. Basically the bet was, whoever gets married first wins. Jeter said he himself doesn't have a girlfriend, so he's getting a one-year handicap."
Jeter was shocked to learn of the news of Matsui’s marriage and admitted this is one bet he’s likely to lose.
"I got one year? No chance," told the Journal News. "I'll give him the money today. That's pretty good. How do you say sneaky in Japanese? Ain't that something? I should have known he was up to something."
