Avoiding arbitration is always nice.
Especially nice for a few Major League Baseball stars on Friday.
Things kicked off in Detroit, where the Tigers reached a deal with recently acquired third baseman Miguel Cabrera. Cabrera - who joined the team from Florida along with Dontrelle Willis in December - inked a one-year contract worth $11.3 million to avoid salary arbitration.
In Colorado, National League MVP runner-up Matt Holliday also escaped the arbitration wrath. After a fantastic season which saw him lead his Rockies to the World Series, Holliday was rewarded with a two-year, $23 million contract. Holliday hit .340 last season with 36 homers and 137 RBIs, numbers that saw him finish second to Jimmy Rollins in the MVP voting.
In Atlanta, the Braves locked up first baseman Mark Teixeira to a one-year deal worth $12.5 million. After acquiring the power-hitting 1B prior to the 2007 trade deadline, the Braves made it clear that keeping "Tex" in Atlanta was a major priority. In under half a season in Atlanta, Teixeira hit .317 with 17 HR and 56 RBI.
