He's a UFC commentator, a published author of three books, an outspoken advocate of marijuana use and a black belt in jiu-jitsu who once tapped out Royler Gracie in front of the world. But for grappling mastermind Eddie Bravo, martial arts takes a backseat to his dream of becoming a rock star.
Bodog Nation caught up with "The Twister" to talk about mixed martial arts, his revolutionary "rubber guard" style and his new record label.
Bodog Nation: Talk about how you got into martial arts.
Eddie Bravo: Like most people back in the '90s, I was into karate, and then I saw the UFC and I was like, "Damn! Royce Gracie just knocked the world on the head!" I used to wrestle in high school, and I thought it would be a perfect way to stay in shape, so I joined jiu-jitsu with Jean Jacques Machado.
BN: Fast-forward to today. You're known for all these crazy moves.
EB: This is a complete accident. It's just a hobby that I got obsessed with. I started jiu-jitsu when I was 24 after I moved to Hollywood to become a rock star. It was a backup to my music. I was doing jiu-jitsu to stay in shape, so I wouldn't be a fat rock star, and the jiu-jitsu happened to blow up before the music did.
