Fresh off his knockout loss to Quentin “Rampage” Jackson (27-6-0) on May 26, former light heavyweight champion Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell (20-4-0) is challenging all comers, even those who aren’t on the UFC payroll just yet.
In an interview with The Baltimore Sun, “The Iceman” spoke about his loss and the fighters he’d like to face next. “Any of the good ones,” he said. “There's Shogun , there's Henderson. You've got Fedor coming over. Nogueira is coming over in the heavyweight .”
It’s an answer that raises a lot of questions. Is Fedor Emelianenko (26-1-0) coming to the octagon? Will Liddell move to heavyweight to fight him?
According to Liddell, he is currently focused on getting back to training and hopes to fight again in September or October, possibly against former Pride champion Wanderlei Silva (31-7-1). “I think I match up well with Silva,” Liddell said. “It should be fun. It's a great fight for the fans.”
For now, the big news in the UFC light heavyweight division is the upcoming fight between “Rampage” and Dan Henderson (22-5-0) who beat Silva in February of ’07 to win his second Pride championship belt. “I think it should be a good fight,” Liddell said about the Jackson vs. Henderson match. “It should be interesting. It will be a fun one for the fans to watch.”
“Fun” is somewhat of an understatement since the fight will effectively unify the UFC and Pride light heavyweight titles and it is likely Liddell will want a shot at the belt again soon. “I think I earned it,” he commented. “After I win this next fight, I think I do deserve to get a title shot.”
But does he mean the light heavyweight title? Or are mixed martial arts fans destined to see a fourth encounter between Liddell and UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture (15-8-0)?
Nothing is certain. Especially with Couture facing Gabriel Gonzaga (8-1-0) at UFC 74 on August 25 and rumors swirling about Fedor stepping into the UFC heavyweight division. Will Couture be the heavyweight champion if and when Liddell makes the move to heavyweight?
Who knows?
