In September 2006, Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic (22-6-2) was considered one of the top heavyweight mixed martial arts fighters in the world with crushing victories over Josh Barnett (20-5-0), Wanderlei Silva (31-7-1) and Hidehiko Yoshida (7-5-1).
Now, a year after winning the Pride open-weight tournament, "Cro Cop" faces a floundering career, with back-to-back losses in the UFC.
Coming off a knockout loss to Gabriel Gonzaga (8-2-0) in April 2007, Filopovic was the favorite to beat Chieck Kongo (21-3-1) at "UFC 75: Champion vs. Champion"but Saturday, Sept. 8 in London, England, "Cro Cop" came up short again, losing by decision after three rounds.
"What can I say," he said in a video interview. "I'm very disappointed. I broke a rib already in the first round, so I was breathing heavily, I also got two knees in the groin, which hurt my stamina. I feel bad, I fought bad, maybe I'm getting older. I just want to go home right now and take a rest. We'll see. Thanks to everyone who came to London to support me."
