MMA Report: \"Tank\" Abbot replaces Bob Sapp at Cage Rage: Judgement Day

He was the first mixed martial arts fighter to wear open-finger gloves and the first to show that you don’t need a dozen black belts to kick someone’s ass.

David “Tank” Abbot (9-12-0) emerged onto the MMA scene in 1995 and immediately caught the eye of fans with his brutal power and unruly behavior. A hard-hitting street brawler, Abbot became a familiar face in the octagon but suffered losses to Dan Severn (77-14-7), Don Frye (17-6-1), Vitor Belfort (14-8-0) and Maurice Smith (9-9-0). After a knockout loss to Pedro Rizzo (15-7-0) in 1998, Abbot disappeared from the game.

Five years later, “Tank” made a comeback facing heavyweight newcomer Frank Mir (9-3-0). The fight did not go as planned. Just 46 seconds into the first round, Abbot was forced to tap out due to a foot lock submission. Following this, he dropped back-to-back losses to Kimo Leopoldo (9-7-1) and Wesley “Cabbage” Correira (18-13-0).

Abbot avenged his loss to “Cabbage” by knocking out the hard-headed Hawaiian in 2005 but went on to accumulate losses at the hands of Olympic Judo champion Hidehiko Yoshida (7-5-1) and Paul “The Headhunter” Buentello (22-9-0).

April 21 “Tank” will step off his bar stool and into the cage once again to face kick-boxer Gary Turner (1-0-1). Abbot replaces Bob Sapp (8-2-1) who withdrew from the fight for personal reasons.
