Dale Earnhardt Jr. announced today that he will join Hendrick Motorsports for NASCAR’s 2008 season.
The decision ends weeks of speculation regarding NASCAR’s most popular driver.
"It became apparent to me the man I wanted to drive for," Earnhardt said of his new boss at a news conference. "He competes with integrity and most importantly, he wins races."
Earnhardt replaces rival driver Kyle Busch on NASCAR’s most dominant team.
"Winning is what it's all about for him," Earnhardt said of Hendrick. "I feel like he's got great cars and I feel like we'll have success on the racetrack. It's a new chapter for me."
Earnhardt joins Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Casey Mears as a teammate at Hendrick Motorsports, which has won 10 of the 14 races this season.
“It’s a wow day,” said Hendrick, who actually signed Earnhardt to a deal when the driver was just 14-years-old. That contract—signed on the back of a napkin in a restaurant— was a little less official than today’s deal, although terms of the agreement have yet to be released.
Earnhardt Jr. currently sits at 12/1 to win this weekend's Citizens Bank 400.
