It was a predictably high-scoring affair Wednesday night when the Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors met up at the Oracle Arena.
But nobody would've predicted who the star of the show would be.
In his second-biggest scoring outburst of the season, Monta Ellis scored 37 points and hauled in nine rebounds as the Warriors edged the Suns 120-118 to close out the first half of the 2008 NBA season.
Baron Davis scored three consecutive baskets down the stretch, taking advantage of Amare Stoudamire's late free-throw miss to give the Warriors the win. Davis finished the night with 27 points and 13 assists while Stoudamire ended with 29 points and 13 rebounds.
If the Suns needed Shaquille O'Neal, this contest didn't prove it. Phoenix outrebounded Golden State 49-34 and held the Warriors' big men - Andris Biedrins and Al Harrington - to just 16 points.
The Warriors closed out the first half with a 32-20 record, putting them in a three-way tie with the Nuggets and Rockets for seventh spot in the Western Conference. Phoenix, at 36-16, remains in top spot.
Golden State came into this contest as -2.5-point home favorites and narrowly missed covering the spread. The game did go over the 234 point total set in the Bodog Sportsbook.
