The Dallas Mavericks’ NBA championship odds have dropped to 8/1 since the acquisition of Jason Kidd last week and their backers were looking at Thursday night’s contest as a good test of the strength of their bet.

What the Mavs found out was they can stick with the champs but there’s still work to do to beat them.

The San Antonio Spurs got a double-double from Tim Duncan as they won their seventh straight game, edging visiting Dallas, 97-94. But the Mavericks beat the point spread, which favored San Antonio by four.

Duncan notched 31 points and 15 rebounds while Manu Ginobili added 17 points and Michael Finley 16. Duncan sealed the win with two free throws with 34.5 seconds to play.

Although they lost, the Mavericks can say they were in the game until the end. Dirk Nowitzki continued his amazing play with 28 points while Kidd added 10 assists. Dallas is 3-2 since his addition.

The betting total was over 184 points.

In other early NBA action:

New Jersey 120, Milwaukee 106: Jason Kidd’s replacement, Devin Harris, scored 21 points as the Nets ran the Bucks out of the building in East Rutherford, N.J. The Nets easily covered the four-point spread.
