NCAA Championship Week Surprises

Morehead! Morehead!

There aren’t many upsets to be found in the early Championship Week results, but the Morehead State Eagles are going to the Big Dance for the first time in 25 years after beating Austin Peay (-1) in double-overtime, 67-65, to win the Ohio Valley Conference title. Morehead State went into the OVC tourney as the No. 4 seed; the even bigger upset came when the Eagles bounced the No. 1 Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks (-4.5) in Friday’s semifinal by a final score of 63-55.

Otherwise, it’s been smooth sailing into the Champ Week finals for the No. 1 seeds. But that’s no guarantee of victory – as the Jacksonville Dolphins found out when they lost the Atlantic Sun title to the No. 2 East Tennessee State Buccaneers, 85-68 as 1-point faves. It’s ETSU’s first trip to the Tournament since 2004, back when they were two-time champions of the Southern Conference.
