Just because the National Football League season is dormant, doesn't mean there isn't a plethora of football news for the Beat to dissect. Here are some of the biggest and most recent transactions:

  • The Carolina Panthers have signed former WR Muhsin Muhammad. The former Pro Bowl receiver spent the first nine seasons of his career in Carolina before signing with Chicago in 2005. He was released by the Bears last week.

In other Panthers news, the team has also released QB David Carr, best known as the No. 1 overall selection of the Houston Texans. Carr has been a bitter disappointment during his career. Carr had signed a two-year, $6-million contract last season but performed terribly in relief duty of injured started Jake Delhomme and was actually demoted to third-string behind unheralded signal-caller Matt Moore.

  • The Detroit Lions have signed safety Dwight Smith to a two-year, $5-million contract. Smith was recently released by the Minnesota Vikings and spent little time on the unemployment line before being scooped up by a NFC North division rival. Smith is only 27 years old and had 13 starts, and had 51 tackles, four interceptions and nine passes defensed for the Vikings in 2007.
  • The Cleveland Browns have no intention of letting Derek Anderson hit the free agent market, even with Brady Quinn waiting in the wings. The Browns have offered the Pro Bowl QB a three-year, $20-million contract according to various league sources. Anderson is set to become a restricted free agent on Friday.
