One adage says: Don't bet against Brett Favre on Monday night. Another says: Don't bet against the Broncos at home. So, what is an NFL gambler to do with this week's featured contest on ESPN? The Broncos (3-3) come off a stirring win as a home underdog over the dangerous Pittsburgh Steelers while the Packers (5-1) return to the field after a bye week.
Of course, one stat to always pay attention to is a team's record against the point spread. Denver is a woeful 1-5 ATS, having entered games versus Buffalo and Oakland early in the year as a big favorite and winding up squeaking out wins in the final minutes. The Packers have been one of the NFL's surprise teams and, as such, have paid off bettors nicely. Green Bay is 4-1-1 ATS and 2-0 ATS on the road. With the Colorado Rockies having shocked the nation by reaching the World Series, the Broncos will hope the Mile High Magic can outdo Favre's Midas touch. Expect Denver to go to its bread-and-butter offense of running the ball early, hoping the thin air will tire out the Packers' defense as the game wears on. Green Bay, meanwhile, will mix things up. Favre will need help from his running backs against the superb Denver secondary, which features cornerbacks Champ Bailey and Dre Bly. If the game comes down to a late field goal, the Broncos have the huge edge with the remarkable Jason Elam on their side. The Packers have inconsistent rookie Mason Crosby kicking for them.
