The Saints didn’t need any divine help on Monday night, but they might have to call upon all intangible forces if they’re going to return to the playoffs.
New Orleans kept its postseason hopes alive a few hours after learning they will likely lose Reggie Bush for the rest of the season. Drew Brees threw for 328 yards and three touchdowns as the Saints demolished the sinking Falcons 34-14 in Atlanta.
The Saints covered the point spread, which favored them by five, and they also were responsible for sending the betting total over 44.
The game was overshadowed by the news of Bush's injury and Michael Vick's conviction on violations related to his actions with illegal dog-fighting. Vick, the former Falcons' star quarterback, was sentenced to 23 months in prison on Monday. Bush, the Saints' mercurial running back, will learn Tuesday the extend of a knee tear, but it's expected he will be ruled out for the season.
Aaron Stecker, starting in place of Bush, rushed for 100 yards on 20 carries. Wideout David Patten had a monster game with 122 yards and a touchdown on nine catches. Marques Colston caught two TDs from Brees and finished with nine catches for 92 yards.
The Saints improved to 6-7 and are one game behind Minnesota for the final wild-card berth in the NFC. Atlanta fell to 3-10. The Falcons started quarterback Chris Redman, who threw for 298 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
