NHL Betting: Hurricanes Storm Over Leafs, 7-1

Next time you wonder why they're still playing hockey in June you'll know it's because of nights like this one. The NHL only had one game on its schedule Tuesday night, following a three-game set on Monday. The league was so eager to start the season, they opened up in September overseas. But for some inexplicable reason, the schedule makers halted to the action for 48 hours. Plus, it's not like they were showcasing the Penguins or Ducks or Rangers.

The only history between the two combatants on Tuesday had to do with the home team's coach. Paul Maurice once led the Carolina Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup finals. He now coaches the Toronto Maple Leafs and may want to fly south after a brutal defensive performance by his squad.

Carolina scored seven unanswered goals and won at the Air Canada Centre, 7-1. Justin Williams, Cory Stillman, Matt Cullen, Ray Whitney, Scott Walker, Jeff Hamilton and Eric Staal all scored goals. Williams and Stillman each had two assists, as did captain Rod Brind'Amour. The Hurricanes outshot the Leafs 39-28 and Cam Ward made 27 saves for the win.

Carolina paid +130 on the puckline for the upset (meaning a winning wager of $100 would net a $130 profit). The betting total went over six goals.
