Magnificent Malkin?
Mario Lemieux may be willing to cede his nickname to the Pittsburgh Penguins’ leading scorer the way Evgeni Malkin is going.
The super sophomore became the first player in the NHL to reach 80 points this season when he led the Penguins to 5-4 victory over the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre on Thursday night.
Malkin scored his 35th goal and added two assists for the Penguins, who rallied for the upset win. Pittsburgh paid its backers +145 on the puckline (meaning a winning hockey bet of $100 would net $145). The nine goals were way over the 5.5 listed on the betting total.
Malkin tied the game at 10:22 of the third period then assisted on Sergei Gonchar’s winner 36 seconds later.
In other notable NHL games on Thursday:
Columbus 3, Ottawa 2: The Blue Jackets paid a whopping +210 for the shootout victory in Ottawa. Rick Nash beat Ray Emery in regulation and in the shootout to lead the Blue Jackets.
New York Islanders 1, Tampa Bay 0: Rick DiPietro made 32 saves for the Islanders, who paid -105 at home. Miroslav Satan scored the only goal.
Boston 5, Florida 4: The underdog Bruins came back from a two-goal deficit in the third period then won in a shootout on Marco Sturm’s goal. They paid +115 on the road.
