The Pittsburgh Penguins were hooting and hollering about their Stanley Cup odds because they nabbed Marian Hossa at the NHL trade deadline. Turns out they probably should’ve focused on getting a goalie.
Hossa suffered a knee injury in the third period and starting netminder Ty Conklin was pulled after allowing three goals on 13 shots as the Penguins fell 5-1 to the Bruins in Boston. Marco Sturm scored the game’s first two goals to lead the streaking Bruins to their fifth win in a row. Tim Thomas made 27 saves, continuing his hot run.
Boston paid -125 on the puckline (meaning a winning hockey bet of $125 would pay $100). The betting total went over 5.5 goals when Bruins rookie David Krejci scored with 2:11 to play.
Hossa’s knee injury wasn’t specified. He left the game after 13 shifts and didn’t play at all in the third period.
In other NHL games on Thursday:
Philadelphia 3, Ottawa 1: The Flyers added to the Senators’ misery as Martin Biron made 32 saves for an upset victory in Philadelphia. The Flyers paid +125, spoiling the return to the Ottawa bench by Bryan Murray. The team’s GM takes over the coaching reins after firing John Paddock.
New York Rangers 4, Carolina 2: The Rangers got goals from four different players en route to a road victory that paid -130.
New York Islanders 5, Atlanta 4: Trent Hunter’s overtime goal lifted the Islanders in Atlanta, where they were favored at -115.
