Rarely does an NHL team come back from a three-goal deficit. Four goals? Almost impossible. Five? Uhhh...

But that's exacly what the Montreal Canadiens did Tuesday night, rallying from a 5-0 hole to stun the New York Rangers 6-5 in a shootout.

The Montreal franchise - ready to celebrate it's centennial celebration in 2009 - had never seen a team rally from five goals down. But thanks to two-goal performances from Alex Kovalev and Michael Ryder, the Habs pulled the feat in front of a frenzied hometown crowd.

Brendan Shanahan scored two goals and Jaromir Jagr had four assists before the halfway point of the contest. The Rangers looked to have this one in hand early, scoring two power-play goals and another three at even strength before the Habs began to pick away.

In the shootout, Saku Koivu scored the go-ahead goal and then Jagr missed the net against Cristobal Huet to send the Bell Center into loud cheers. The sold-out crowd was at its strongest in the third period, when the Habs scored three goals in an eight-minute window to tie it up.

The Canadiens were listed as -105 in the Bodog Sportsbook coming into this game, while the Rangers were at -115. The flurry of scoring sent the game well over the posted total of 5.5 goals.
