The January long weekend gave way to some early Monday hockey action, as the Carolina Hurricanes rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the New York Islanders 3-2 on Martin Luther King day.
After second-period goals from Andy Hilbert and Miroslav Satan staked the Long Island troops out to the lead, the Hurricanes rallied behind two unlikely heroes - defensemen Nic Wallin and Mike Commodore - to send the game into overtime. In the extra session, Cory Stillman scored his 21st goal of the season (on a 4-on-3 power play) to earn Carolina two points.
The goals from Wallin and Commodore were something of anomalies as both broke 11-game scoreless droughts. In other NHL anomaly news, this game marked the first time this season that the Islanders lost a game when leading after two periods. New York had been an impressive 15-0 when winning after 40 minutes prior to this contest.
The game ruined another solid effort from Islanders' netminder Rick DiPietro, who has been New York's best player this season and should warrant some mention for MVP honors if the Isles make the playoffs and beyond. His 26 stops - 10 of which game in a busy second period - were good but not good enough to beat Carolina, who have now won two straight.
The Hurricanes were +110 underdogs in the contest, while the five goals scored went under the posted total of 5.5 in the Bodog Sportsbook.
