As teams start the preseason, there is always still shopping to do to find that final piece of the puzzle. Here are the top free agents still out there . . .
Nikolai Zherdev: Cut loose by the Rangers after an unfavorable arbitration decision, the enigmatic Ukrainian forward is still (reportedly) weighing contract offers from both NHL and KHL clubs.
Mats Sundin: After a disappointing half-season stint with the Vancouver Canucks, the Swedish forward still hasn’t decided whether he’ll resume his NHL career or finally hang up his skates.
Miroslav Satan: Admittedly, Satan turned out to be a huge bust for the Pens in 2009. They paid him $3.5 million, and he ended up playing ten games for the team’s AHL affiliate in Scranton.
Also still looking for a team as the preseason opens: forwards Robert Lang, Manny Malhotra, Dominic Moore, Michael Peca, Rob Niedermayer, and Maxim Afinogenov, and defensemen Marc-Andre Bergeron and Francis Bouillon.
