A.J. Price might be playing his way to Big East Player of the Year honors. And he'll probably have a few votes from the Notre Dame faithful.
Price was outstanding for the Huskies Wednesday night as UConn defeated rivals Notre Dame 84-78 in a Big East battle at Storrs. The junior guard poured in 26 points and added nine assists to keep his team white hot. The Huskies have now won seven straight contests and are keeping pace with conference-leading Georgetown.
The loss ruined an otherwise brilliant evening for hulking Notre Dame sophomore Luke Harangody. The 6'11 post scored 32 points - his highest total of the season - and hauled in 16 rebounds. Harangody is widely considered to be one of the main candidates for Big East POY, but Price's recent string of quality play has put him in the conversation as well.
Notre Dame was down by four points with 30 seconds left to play, but couldn't covert on a number of chances late and went scoreless for the final half-minute. Incredibly, the only two Irish players to score in the final eight minutes were Harangody and guard Kyle McAlarney.
The Fighting Irish came into this contest as +5.5-point road (-105) underdogs, narrowly missing a cover. The game went over the 151 point total posted in the Bodog Sportsbook.
