One of the most underrated golfers on the PGA Tour continues to be K.J. Choi. The South Korean pro had two big wins last year and was in contention for victory a handful of other times.
Entering the Sony Open in Honolulu, Choi had long golf odds of 22/1 to win the tournament. That high number was despite the fact Choi has played well at the Waialae Country Club in recent years. He didn’t disappoint in the opening round.
Choi shot a 6-under-par 64 to take a one-shot lead heading into Friday’s second round. It was the sixth time he opened a tournament at Waialae by shooting in the 60s.
He holds a one-stroke lead over three golfers. Two of those, Jimmy Walker and Steve Marino are part of the 3/2 field. The other, Heath Slocum, holds 66/1 odds.
The favorites remain Jim Furyk (15/2) and Vijay Singh (8/1). Furyk was at 2-under and Singh was at even-par 70. Hot shot Australian rookie Jason Day (3/2 in the field) shot a 3-over 73.
