Could the biggest prize of the Major League Baseball trade deadline be going to Tampa?
Word from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Pirates are talking to the Tampa Bay Rays about a deal that would send Jason Bay to the American League. Bay, the 2004 NL Rookie of the Year and All-Star left fielder, is hitting .284 this season with 22 HR and 62 RBI. He's currently pulling in $6 million per season, which could easily be absorbed by the low-cost Rays.
The big question looming is what Tampa is prepared to give up in exchange. Early reports are that Pittsburgh is asking for a top-flight prospect along the lines of David Price, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2007 MLB Entry Draft.
