If anyone was going to be against the fight between Tim Sylvia (24-4) and Fedor Emelianenko (27-1), you'd think it would be UFC heavyweight champion Randy "The Natural" Couture (16-8).

After all, Couture left the octagon for a shot at the top-ranked Russian and now he's tied up in a legal battle with UFC management while the man he beat to win the belt is getting the fight that he wants.

Right?

Not necessarily.

In an interview with MMAweekly.com, Couture explains how the fight between Sylvia and Emelianenko might spare him having to fight again.

“The whole thing for me at 44-years-old is to be considered the best fighter in the world," he says. "Now if (Fedor) loses to Tim, then obviously the question probably gets answered because he lost to Tim, and then they’ve got to decide and rank who’s the No. 1 fighter in the heavyweight division after that.”

In other words, if Fedor loses to Sylvia and Couture has beaten Sylvia already, does Couture need to fight Fedor to prove he's the best?

We say yes, but that's just because we want to see the fight.
