Like so many NCAA powers, USC suffered a season plagued by upsets and poor individual performances. The preseason No. 1 entered the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day as the nation’s seventh-ranked team and played like champions.

Senior quarterback John David Booty threw three touchdown passes as the Trojans demolished No. 13 Illinois 49-17 in Pasadena, Calif., while putting up a Rose Bowl-record 633 total yards. USC covered the two-touchdown point spread and didn’t need much help from the Illini to send the betting total over 50. The Trojans’ 49 points tied a Rose Bowl mark.

USC came out gunning and took a 7-0 lead when Chauncey Washington hauled in an eight-yard TD pass from Booty 4:03 into the game. Washington ran in another score to make the score 21-0. From there, Booty managed a solid game, finishing 25-for-37 for 255 yards passing and one interception.

Joe McKnight ran 10 times for 125 yards and a touchdown for Pete Carroll’s team.
