He got off to a slow start but in the end, Roy Jones Jr. was too much for Felix "Tito" Trinidad.
Saturday, January 19 at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY, Jones (52-4, 38 KO's) put on a show for the crowd and was warned by the referee for showboating, but still dropped Trinidad (42-3, 35 KO's) to the canvas two times en route to a unanimous decision victory.
Judge Julie Lederman scored the fight 117-109 for Jones, while Nelson Vasquez and Tom Kaczmarek called it it 116-110.
"I can't believe you stayed in there 12 rounds with me," Jones said to his opponent after the fight. "People thought we were old."
Before the match, the 39-year-old Jones predicted that he would knock Trinidad out in 4-rounds, and said afterwards that he nearly did. "He was slipping some really good punches," he explained. "I was missing knocking him out by about an inch on some of those shots."
Trinidad, 35, came out of retirement for the fight, and saw incredible support from the crowd, but said the knockdowns cost him the match.
"I take nothing away from Roy, but if I could have avoided the knockdowns, I think I could have won the fight," he said. "Roy was very fast and strong. He threw great punches. I have no excuses. He demonstrated speed and took my body."
While Trinidad isn't sure whether he'll fight again, Jones said that he would love to face 168-pound Welsh champion Joe Calzaghe (44-0, 32 KO's) in his next match, saying "I'll go to Wales tomorrow".
