A day after being arrested for mugging a 76-year-old man, attacking him with a kitchen knife and stealing his car, mixed martial arts fighter Ryan Gracie (5-2-0) was found dead in his jail cell in Sao Paulo, Brasil.

According to police, Gracie was taken into custody on Dec. 15 after stealing and crashing the car, then attempting to steal a motorcycle to flee from police. The owner of the motorcycle and several other people detained him until police arrived.

Following his arrest, Gracie tested positive for marijuana, cocaine and an unknown anti-anxiety drug. He was found slumped over in his jail cell the next morning.

This was not his first encounter with police. In 2000, he was arrested for stabbing a person in a night club in Rio de Janeiro.

In October of 2004, he nearly lost his leg due to a gunshot wound after accidentally shooting himself in the femur.
