UFC fighter Sean Sherk (32-2-1) has been stripped of his lightweight championship belt.
Sherk, who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs following his fight with Hermes Franca (18-6-0) in July, was originally given a year long suspension by the California State Athletic Commission as well as a $2500 fine. On Dec. 4, the CSAC decided to reduce the length of Sherk's suspension but uphold their decision and the fine.
Accordingly, the UFC has decided to withdraw recognition from Sherk as their lightweight champion.
B.J. Penn (11-4-1) and Joe Stevenson (28-7-0) will now fight for the belt at "UFC 80: Rapid Fire", Jan. 19 in Newcastle, England.
