Stanford Beats Marquette in Overtime, 82-81

The twin towers of Stanford needed every inch of their lanky frames to get past Marquette on Saturday.
The Lopez brothers combined for 48 points, including the winning layup in overtime, as the Cardinal won a riveting second-round matchup with the No. 6-seeded Golden Eagles, 82-81, in the South Region of the NCAA Tournament.
Brook Lopez hooked in the final two points of the game with 1.3 seconds to play in the extra session to lead No. 3 Stanford to the Sweet 16. Lopez finished with 30 points and his twin brother, Robin, added 18 for the Cardinal, who won in front of a partisan crowd in Anaheim, Calif.
Mitch Johnson had a career-high 16 assists as Stanford won despite losing their coach, Trent Johnson, who was ejected in the first half.
The Cardinal spoiled a heroic effort by Jerel McNeal, who had 30 points and hit three three-pointers in overtime for Marquette.
Stanford was favored by three against the point spread.
In the East Region of March Madness on Saturday evening:
No. 4 Washington State 61, No. 5 Notre Dame 41: Wazzou got 18 points from superb point guard Derrick Low as they bounced the Irish and Big East player of the year Luke Harangody from the tournament. The Cougars were favored by two in Denver.
In the Midwest Region:
No. 1 Kansas 75, No. 9 UNLV 56: The Jayhawks showed they’re on a mission this year, dominating a talented UNLV team from the outset in Omaha, Neb. Mario Chalmers had 17 points to lead four Kansas players in double figures. The Jayhawks covered the 14-point spread.
