The Tennessee Volunteers survived one of the biggest NCAA matchups of the year, and now they've reaped the benefits.
The Volunteers have opened as the No. 1 squad according to the ESPN/USA Today Coach's Poll and look likely to be No. 1 when the AP Top 25 releases Tuesday.
"No. 1's great," Tennessee guard Chris Lofton said, "but we want to be No. 1 at the end of the year."
The Volunteers were able to win 66-62 in a battle with then No. 1 Memphis. Tennessee will try to hold on to their No.1 ranking as the NCAA Tournament approaches. SEC opponents Vanderbilt, Kentucky and Florida remain on their schedule before the SEC tournament.
