Michael Jordan. James Worthy. Phil Ford.
And now, you can add Tyler Hansbrough to that list.
Those names (along with Antawn Jamison, Jack Cobb, George Glamack and Lennie Rosenbluth) will now forever be linked in University of North Carolina Tar Heel lore as all have had their jerseys retired. The latest is Hansbrough, who on Tuesday was named the national player of the year by the Sporting News. That ensures that his jersey will be hung from the rafters of Carolina along with some of the greatest players to ever wear Tar Heel Blue.
Hansbrough led the ACC in scoring (23.1 points) and rebounding (10.5) this season, pacing the Tar Heels to a regular-season title and the current No. 1 ranking in the country. But this most recent honor - the jersey retirement - might be the biggest feat of his career.
For a Carolina player to get his jersey retired, he must capture at least one of the six national player of the year awards up for grabs. They include the Associated Press, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, the National Association of Basketball Coaches, Sporting News, the Wooden Award and the Naismith Award.
