What has been a frustrating Wimbledon to follow enters Day 8 with one certainty: Venus Williams vs. Maria Sharapova is the headline match of the day.
The Grand Slam tennis tournament has been plagued by rain and confusion as the schedule continues to change at the All England Club in London. The women's quarterfinals were scheduled for Tuesday, but six fourth-round matches remain to be played, including the much-anticipated contest between previous champions.
Williams, the No. 23 seed, had trouble against Akiko Morigami in the third round while Sharapova has had little difficulty in reaching the Round of 16. She will be the favorite in this match, which will be the third played on Centre Court, should the schedule go according to plan. No. 3 Sharapova holds Wimbledon odds of 3/1 to win it all. Only top-seeded Justine Henin (9/4) has better tennis odds.
Another leading contender who will be in action on Tuesday is defending champion Amelie Mauresmo, the No. 4 seed, who faces No. 14 Nicole Vaidisova on Centre Court. Mauresmo has dropped just 10 games in three rounds and is primed for progress into the quarters, although she is troubled with a thigh injury.
On the men's side, No. 3 Andy Roddick, who holds Wimbledon odds of 10/1, will play on Centre Court against unseeded Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu. Their match is one of the few that will start fresh while several others remain to be completed.
