Well, when they do get to the World Series, the Red Sox seem to be unbeatable.
After an 86-year wait for a championship ended with a sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2004, Boston may be on its way to making quick work of another National League opponent in the Fall Classic. The Red Sox relied on a strong bullpen and clutch hitting to beat the Colorado Rockies, 2-1, at Fenway Park on Thursday night, taking a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.
The Red Sox were heavy favorites again, paying a stingy -210 on the moneyline (meaning a winning World Series bet of $210 would net a $100). The betting total was well under 10 runs.
Curt Schilling went 5.1 innings for the win, allowing one run, four hits and a walk while striking out four. Schilling fell behind 1-0 in the first inning when he hit Colorado's leadoff hitter, Willy Taveras, then gave up a hit to Matt Holliday and an RBI groundout to Todd Helton. The Red Sox rallied for runs in the fourth and fifth innings, chasing the Rockies' rookie starter, Ubaldo Jimenez, after 4.2 innings.
Mike Lowell scored on a Jason Varitek sacrifice fly in the fourth then drove in David Ortiz with an RBI double off Jimenez in the fifth.
Another highlight came on a corporate promotion when the Red Sox' Jacoby Ellsbury stole a base in the fourth inning, winning a free taco from Taco Bell for all of the United States. The promotion takes place on Oct. 30 from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. in each time zone.
Game 3 of the World Series is Saturday at Coors Field in Denver (8 p.m. ET, Fox), with Daisuke Matsuzaka scheduled to take the hill for the Red Sox against the Rockies' Josh Fogg.
